#artsongjam

It’s time for an operamission update!

In case you missed them, please take a glance at the three great reviews for our recent North American Premiere of G.F. Händel’s first opera Almira.

Several events are brewing on numerous front burners, plans to be announced this month.  For a special Season Preview

Please join us Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at 8:00 PM for a spontaneous Art Song Jam – classical open mic, $10 cover, bring an art song to sing, or just come listen.

Presented by operamission and Neke Carson at the Gershwin Hotel, 7 East 27th Street (just east of 5th Ave), in the Lobby.

Repertoire-wise, between October and June, we will cover the years 1707, 1912, and 2013.  Enough hints for now.  Join us Tuesday, or if you’re not in NYC…follow the tweets.

A special treat at our #artsongjam will be three hot-off-the-press Walt Whitman settings by composer Clint Borzoni, written for and sung by countertenor Daniel Bubeck.

handel alert

Processing, planning, moving forward…

August and September of 2011 have made up a true whirlwind of operatic activity. We attacked, both in unique operamission fashion, two of the greatest operas in the repertoire – Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Puccini’s La Bohème. We’re thrilled to be connecting to new audiences every day. Thank you for following operamission‘s progress and supporting the vision.

Video clips of both productions are being shared on operamission’s YouTube channel, along with some fine footage of Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat from June 2011.

operamission recently received a very nice nod in the October 2011 issue of London’s Opera Now magazine. Robert Levine reports on the New York opera scene, with informative coverage of the Met and NYCO, and then spends a nice healthy page exposing what he calls “The New York Fringe.” Not available online, please take a look at this PDF version of the article, and don’t miss the giant photo of soprano Marcy Richardson by photographer Cory Weaver. Well, it’s hard to miss… Enjoy the article.

You may also enjoy this recent interview with conductor Jennifer Peterson on YAP Tracker, which is an online resource for young opera professionals.

The current exciting news happens to be the announcement of our Spring 2012 production:

figaro al fresco

operamission performs at the Bryant Park Fall Festival on Monday, September 19, 2011 at 12:30 PM.

After Act I of ‘Puccini’s La Bohème: Assembly Required,’ the Festival called me up and offered me 60-90 minutes of weekday noontime festivities, so we will bring them a generous and refreshing slice of Mozart, expressly catered to the occasion…

Figaro al fresco – a comic cliffhanger

Superimposing the 18th-century Viennese outdoor wind band tradition of light entertainment onto the most brilliant of comic operas, operamission presents Acts I & II of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro (‘The Marriage of Figaro’).

Staged by director Peter Kozma, a vibrant cast partners with a chamber band fit for Bryant Park’s Fall Festival Stage. Conductor Jennifer Peterson leads from the piano.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

bass CORY CLINES (Figaro) • soprano SHARIN APOSTOLOU (Susanna) • baritone MICHAEL WEYANDT (Count) • soprano INNA DUKACH (Countess)

and rounding out our cast:

countertenor TYLER WAYNE SMITH as Cherubino

bass LAWRENCE LONG as Bartolo and Antonio

mezzo-soprano JANARA KELLERMAN as Marcellina

and tenor IVÁN RIVERA as Basilio

…joined by BORIS SHPITALNIK and GROVER EDWARDS on clarinets, KEITH KREINDLER on bassoon,  MIKE SAYRE and BRIAN HILL on horns, and KYLE COLINA on the double bass.

The concert is FREE, and we will be live-tweeting the synopsis at @fignyc!

operamission needs your support, now especially — tell anyone you know to send their dollars.

A ‘free concert’ is not free to produce! Spread the word of this worthy cause. Contact Jennifer Peterson if you’d like to know more.
